Spatialytics open to your ideas for the Google Summer of Code 2010, via the OSGeo

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects (.pdf flyer here). The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) is gathering ideas around Geospatial projects.

Spatialytics.ORG is among the projects listed on the OSGeo GSoC wiki page.

Spatialytics is interested in having students working on different ideas to improve the Spatial ETL GeoKettle, the SPatial OLAP server GeoMondrian and/or the SOLAP mapping component SOLAPLayers. The project ideas proposed on that page, if selected, will be mentored by Dr. Thierry Badard who also leads the GeoSOA research team at Laval University in Quebec City.

GSoC remaining timeline :

April 9th 2010: Student application deadline. The earlier you start the more probable it is that you will be accepted! There is two way feedback during the application process which really helps you improve and clarify your application before this final deadline.
April 26th 2010: Accepted student proposals are announced.
May 24th 2010: Coding begins!
July 12-16th: Mid-term evaluation.
August 9th: Pencils down!

FOSS4G 2010 : Spatialytics will give a tutorial on the Spatial ETL GeoKettle

Spatialytics will be present at FOSS4G 2010 in Barcelona to represent Spatialytics.ORG Open Source Geo-BI projects.

Dr. Thierry Badard will give a tutorial on the Spatial ETL GeoKettle at FOSS4G.

The following points will be addressed during this 30 minute tutorial:

- Short introduction to fundamental concepts on ETL and data warehouses
- Installation of GeoKettle: software prerequisites and supported platforms
- Exploration of the graphical user interface
- Basic concepts: transformations, steps, jobs and entries
- The transformation repository
- Access to heterogeneous data sources: ESRI Shapefiles, spatial DBMS, …
- Writing geospatial data: PostGIS tables, Shapefiles, …
- Transformations: spatial selection and filtering, schema changes, SRS handling, coordinates transformations, integration of several data sources, geoprocessing, use of scripting capabilities, …

About GeoKettle :

GeoKettle is a Spatial ETL (Extract, Transform (integration, data cleansing, data structure, “updating”, …) and Load) tool powered by Kettle, a Pentaho Open Source project. GeoKettle is a true and consistent integration of the spatial component where all steps provided by Kettle are able to deal with geospatial data types. Some geospatial dedicated steps have also been added. Download GeoKettle.

Spatialytics will be present at Geomatics 2009 and talk about Spatialytics.org. This is an event organized by the Montreal Chapter of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics (CIG) that will be held October 21 and 22 in Montreal at the Hilton Montréal Bonnaventure hotel. This Conference comes back every two years.

Luc Vaillancourt will give a presentation (in French) with the title “GeoKettle, GeoMondrian et SOLAPLayers : an Open Source Geo-BI suite“, Wednesday Oct. 21 at 2:55 PM in the “Verdun”conference room.

Spatialytics presents Spatialytics.org projects at Location Intelligence Conference 2009

Luc Vaillancourt, co-founder and CEO of the new company Spatialytics Solutions inc. (Spatialytics), did a presentation of Spatialytics.org Geo-BI Open Source projects at LIC 2009 (Location Intelligence Conference) last week at Westminster, CO. Mr. Vaillancourt had to replace Dr. Thierry Badard who originally was representing his research team GeoSOA of Laval University.

This presentation was the first public appearance for the new company. The message was all about the three Open Source Projects (GeoKettle, GeoMondrian and SOLAPLayers) hosted at Spatialytics.org who originated at Laval University and their role in the Business Intelligence Open Source stack from Pentaho.

September 29th 2009, Dr. Thierry Badard gave a presentation at the autumn Conference of the AGMQ (Association de géomatique municipale du Québec) whose main theme was “Geomatics: Essential tools for public safety“.

This conference was held at Laval university, in Quebec City. The presentation which Dr. Badard gave was about the results its GeoSOA research team work.

The title was “Putting the techniques and tools of Open Source Geospatial BI at the service of public safety”. It, amongst other things, presented the three Geo-BI Open Source projects developed at Laval university, GeoKettle, GeoMondrian and SOLAPLayers.

The Open Source Business Resource (OSBR.ca) online journal publishes this month an interesting special issue on Business Intelligence (BI). It includes a paper from the GeoSOA research group entitled “Enabling geospatial Business Intelligence” which provides details on what is geospatial BI and about the open source GeoBI software stack (GeoKettle, GeoMondrian and SOLAPLayers, formerly known as Spatialytics) developed by the group.
